For
years, collectors have dyeing and decorating
Beanie Babies to create a one-of-kind treasure.
With the introduction of the Color-Me Beanie,
Ty is now capitalizing on the craft quality
of Beanies and encouraging collectors to
make their Beanie Baby unique. Below
you will find instructions for two different
dyeing methods as well as information on
where to buy Halo Beanie Babies to dye and
where to purchase them already dyed.
For inspiration, view our special photo
gallery for dyed Beanies.
METHOD #1:
Stove Top Instructions:
Here are the instructions we have put together
based on comments we received from Smart
Collecting members especially Pam in California
and Amy in Washington.
1. Take off hang tag.*
2. Poke some holes in wings with a pin.
3. Pre-washed the bears with a little detergent.
Rinse well. (optional)
4. Heat a large pot of water to almost boiling.
5. Put approximately 3 capfuls of liquid
RIT dye into the pot. Stir till blended.
6. Remove from heat.
7. Place Beanie into the pot.
METHOD
#2:
Washing Machine Instructions (for six Beanies)
Submitted by Jackie:
Items needed:
Plastic gloves, Rit liquid dye, 5 or 10
gallon pot, box of Arm & Hammer Super
Washing Soda, Clorox, detergent, optional
tag gun.
1. Remove the hang tag*,
no need to remove ribbon.
2. Mix 1/2 cup of the Arm & Hammer Super
Washing Soda with hot water (enough to cover
Beanies). This is suppose to help the fabric
receive the dye better.
3. Put the 6 Beanies in pot and stir and
push down in pot to ensure they all get
soaked. Let sit 1/2 hour. Stir occasionally.
4. Hand rinse Beanies under faucet and wring
out a little.
5. Start washing machine and fill to lowest
water level with HOT water.
6. After filled add Rit dye (I use 1/2 bottle)
to washer and agitate to mix.
7. Put Beanies into washing machine and
run on gentle cycle 1/2 hour or until desired
color. Remember color will be a little lighter
than it appears when finished.
8. After desired color is reached, using
plastic gloves and take our each Beanie
and individually rinse under running water
until all runs clear.
9. Wring out and wrap in towel and pat to
get out as much water as possible.
10. Repeat for all Beanies
11. Hand pat down "fur" to smooth.
Note: It should return to normal after drying.
12. Put in indirect sunlight to dry, usually
takes 24 hours.
13. Optional reattach hang tag with tag
gun.
Clean washer!
Don't forget to immediately clean washer
after dyeing process. Use 1 cup of Clorox
and detergent and run through an entire
washing cycle. Clean all lint traps and
surfaces so nothing stains.
Barb used spray dye called Tumble Dye for
these Beanies!
To
dye the wings a different color, tape up
the wings and immerse just the Beanie in
dye. Let dry. Take the tape off and
dip just the wings and halo into the dye.
Wiped off the extra dye, then let it dry.
* How to Remove Hang Tag
1. Use a needlepoint or
other large needle and work from front to
back. Insert the eye of the needle in the
tag connector hole touching the tag connector
the whole time until the eye of the needle
is all the way through.
2. Bend the end of the
tag connector 90 degrees so that it is flush
with the stem.
3. Insert the end of the
connector into the eye of your needle so
that it is flush and then slowly pull the
needle back though the hole to remove the
tag. (Reinsert the tag connector following
the same procedures.)
HINT: To make it
easier to find the hole to reattach the
tag later on, use the needle to thread a
piece of white yarn through the hole, tie
the ends together and leave it there while
dying your Halo. You can also remove that
tag altogether and reattach it with a fastener
gun or make up your own hang tag like on
the yellow Halo show above.
